Press Release

ON AIR-NAMIBIA AND THE OVER-FLIGHT CHARGES

SWAPO Party National Headquarters – Windhoek

    Wednesday, 11 November 2011

The SWAPO Party Youth League Department of Economic Affairs issues this press statement against the recent prevailing media reports on Air Namibia.

We want to make it categorically clear that we as a patriotic and progressive mass movement acknowledge the critical role Air Namibia plays within the total space of our economy, despite the financial challenges it continue to encounter.
Therefore the prevailing situation at Air Namibia leaves one to wonder if such claims and accusations are genuine or pure fabrications aimed to tarnish the name of our NATIONAL PRIDE for the reasons only known to the accusers, if not to make space for the private new airline rumoured to enter the industry.

In the same vein, the SWAPO Party Youth League strongly feels that the situation is planned to further cripple the financial ability of Air Namibia with the aim to make it close-down, as well as to advance the agenda of the so-called no-go-zone in the aviation industry as an important economic sector by certain people of our society, a scenario that can no longer be tolerated in an independent Namibia.

It is therefore disturbing to note that the ministry of Works and Transport as the supervisory authority who ought to protect Air Namibia as a national player in this important economic sector by all means care less.

Further, it is also shocking to learn that the ministry of Works and Transport allows the over-flight charges to be collected in South Africa as if we are still a province of South Africa. More over we wonder as to when this outsourcing was advertised, the value of the over-flight charges from the Namibian Air Space versus the actual income our government gains from this contract, as well as to when this contract will come to end. In the same context, the SWAPO Party Youth League also wants to know if the whole of our air-space on the over-flight charges is accounted for.

To this end the SWAPO Party Youth League calls for economic sabotages in Namibia to be stopped with immediate effect, and that everybody party to it, directly or indirectly be brought to book.

I thank you and Aluta Continua!!!!!!

    Signed
